Room 16’s Colourful Science

We have been doing a selection of colourful science experiments this month.  Yesterday we dissolved the sugared coating from Skittles in warm water to make patterns.  It worked instantly.  We had great fun watching the colour of the water change, and observing the different patterns.

Duke of Edinburgh Awards Ceremony

On Tuesday we were delighted to see our first ever Duke of Edinburgh Award winners receive their Certificates at the Aberdeen City Award Ceremony. These young adults have now all left school however it was a pleasure to catch up with them and see how the confidence gained by completing their Bronze Award has supported them as they have moved on from school life.

We have another group of 6 S5 and S6 pupils working hard to complete their Bronze Award this year, culminating in their Excursion section at Whiston Lodge. They are all making excellent progress with their Skills and Volunteering Sections and enjoying all the practice sessions that will support them to complete their Excursion.

Our Colourful World Of Art

‘Our world of colour’ is our whole school interdisciplinary learning context this term and we are loving exploring a different colour every week. We choose one of three activities and are asked to try and sign the colour of the week. We have enjoyed creating with primary colours and secondary colours, tomorrow we are going to experiment with the tertiary colour brown, through cave painting, transient sand art and rubbings. Karen has attached her lesson ideas if you would like to use these at home.

Orchard Brae @ Ashgrove afternoon nursery celebrated Burn’s Day and Chinese New Year

The afternoon children at Orchard Brae @ Ashgrove have been participating in “Burns Day” and “Chinese New Year” celebrations.  They had the opportunity to make tartan pictures and thistles as well as Chinese writing.  They were able to try the traditional Burns supper of “Haggis, Neeps and Tatties” followed by shortbread which they had decorated. Some of the children were not impressed with this Scottish dish. The Chinese food proved more popular and they particularly enjoyed trying to pick up the noodles and rice with the chopsticks.

Having a busy time in our morning nursery at Howes Road

The children in Nursery have had a very busy time! They have enjoyed welcoming new friends into the playroom and playing together to explore snow –brrr! We love PE with Salvador, climbing and jumping and kicking a ball. We made our own playdough to play with and went drumming in the hall –bang, bang, bang!! No wonder we are tired by the time we get home!

Celebrating Chinese New Year in Room 2

Room 2 have had a fantastic week discovering about Chinese New Year.  We created Chinese lanterns for our class window by sticking coloured cellophane.  Some of us loved looking at the colours when we shone torches through them and others made a fantastic crinkly noise.

We had a big sensory session where we tried out different outfits and hats and explored various Chinese artefacts.  The biggest hit had to be the Chinese foods such as prawn crackers, noodles, lychees and sweet chilli sauce which some of us loved to taste and eat while others explored with their hands and feet!

We had a special treat on Thursday as one of the ladies in class brought us in a special ornament to look at which will bring us good fortune and some fortune cookies to open which was great fun!

Room 14 Exploring Our World of Colour

Room 14 enjoyed exploring the snow and ice last week. We added food colouring to make the snow change colour. Everyone had fun.

This week, Room 14 had fun exploring the colourful world of musicals in Drama with Sam. We focused on the musical, Hairspray.

Exploring Elmer In Room 9

The pupils in Room 9 are continuing to enjoy listening to, looking at and doing work from our Book Study of Elmer by David McKee. Our herd of Elmer’s has expanded. Some of our pupils enjoy playing with these wonderful models they made – the Elmer’s are lined up, placed in order, grouped altogether and observed.

We have also experimented with water and ink, noting what happens when the two combine. The pupils in Room 9 together made a lovely piece of modern art based from this science experiment.

Rainbow Fruit Kebabs In Room 5

Room 5 are reading The Rainbow Fish. One of our class celebrated a birthday. We enjoyed birthday cake and rainbow fruit kebabs for snack. We had red strawberries, green grapes and yellow banana on our kebabs.
