Making Pizzas with Room 13

The boys in room 13 have been working on their food preparation skills, making cheese and tomato pizza’s. They practiced their spreading skills and both made tasty pizzas. It was very difficult to not have a wee taste of the cheese before the pizzas were cooked.

Room 7 Celebrate Burns Night

Room 7 have been busy getting into the Scottish spirit in preparation for Burns Night on Friday.  We coloured in our own tartan and designed our own unique tartan using the House of Tartan Website on the interactive board (www.houseoftartan.co.uk).  We listened to The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson in Scots and enjoyed listening to some of Robert Burns poems as well a variety of Scottish music from groups such as the Corries and the Proclaimers!  We can’t wait for our class Burns Supper on Friday afternoon.

Exploring ice and snow in Room 2!

We had a surprise on Thursday morning when we woke up and found snow.  After long bus journeys to get to school, we brought some snow into the classroom so we could explore it during our weather time at Circle Time.  Some of us were not too sure about how cold it was but others were very keen to explore it with both our hands and mouths!  On Friday there was no fresh snow but it was very frosty and icy outside so we explored ice cubes.  It was great fun chasing them around our trays as we tried to pick them up and they kept sliding away!  Matthew and Harris explored snowy scenes and sounds using the Grid Pad and Eye Gaze.  Unfortunately it was super cold and very slidey outside so we couldn’t get outside to explore the snow this time but hopefully some of us will the next time it happens!

Having fun in Room 11

Room 11 have been enjoying a wide variety of activities so far this year, including Sensory music, cooking and using switches.

Home Economics with Howes Hoose

Howes Hoose have been working on increasing their independence in the kitchen, working on food preparation skills and using electrical equipment safely. They have been using these skills to run their soup making business, with the profits going towards the residential and Duke of Edinburgh trips that they will be attending in the Summer term.

PE at Orchard Brae

These are some examples of the activities that we are working during PE classes in both Primary and Secondary at Orchard Brae. As you can see we have been having lots of fun and been learning new skills.

Children’s Author visit

On the 7th of November, we were lucky to have the amazing children’s author, Phil Earle, visit us at Orchard Brae as part of the Scottish Book Trust 20th anniversary tour.

We had a wonderful time hearing about where Phil finds his inspiration (his family, wrestlers and front doors have been big influences) and we even got to hear him read two of his books to us along with a wee bit of dressing up in between!!

Phil has since written a wonderful blog for the Scottish Book Trust about working with pupils with additional support needs. There are some great photos of his visit to Orchard Brae included in the blog and he confirms what we all know about our students – that they are passionate and enthusiastic and this shines throughout everything they do!

Well done to all the students who participated with such enthusiasm and thank you Phil and the Scottish Book Trust for an amazing experience that they will never forget!
