Moving Science in Room 14

Room 14 have been honing their scientific and research skills.  We have been investigating things that move and what makes them move.  Earlier in the term we investigated wind power.  We tried blowing some things over and found that the hairdryer could blow harder than we could.  We decided that we did not want to stay in a windy hurricane town as it was dangerous.

We also looked at whether the shape of something made it easier to move.  We experimented with things we found in school.  The pen rolled if you took the cap off but not with the cap on. The scooter rolled when upright but not if we put it in it’s side. The box of tissues did not roll but the tumbler did.  We found a tyre in our playground and we all had fun rolling it.

Looking Back And Moving Forward With Room 8

The beginning of summer is upon us! As we head into the final stretches of the school year, everyone should take time to reflect on the highs and lows of the year. What worked? What flopped? How can you improve for next year? What from your old job will you bring to your new one? What must you definitely leave behind?

However, when we take time to reflect on our year and take stock of how we’ve grown and changed, we are more able to acknowledge the gifts of this passage and harvest our own learning for the future.

Poetry Inspired Art in Room 13

One of the pupils in Room 13 found a poem, The Owl, by Alfred Lord Tennyson. As he was reading it and showing interest, the class followed up with some additional learning around owls. They have used mixed media to create some lovely art work. This has included natural materials and textures such as bark.

A Surprise For Room 8

Follow us, Room 8, into an amazing journey through our world of rights along with Handa, from “Handa’s surprise” by Eileen Browne.

In the story, Handa, a girl from Kenya, took a surprise bowl of fruits on a journey to her friend Akeyo. Different animals pinched the fruits without Handa’s permission. There were many interesting animals and fruits to find out about, making the journey really fun. As Handa’s journey was about to end, a goat bumped into a tangerine tree, and filled up her empty bowl with tangerines. When she arrived at Akeyo’s village, that was a happy surprise for both Handa and Akeyo. Handa was amazed by the loss of the other fruits, and the presence of tangerines. There was a happy ending because Akeyo’s favourite fruit is tangerine and Handa brought them to him.

What made this story so wonderful was the beautiful describing words. It also introduced the theme of friendship and its importance, which is another positive asset to this story. The surprise at the end of the story added a comical twist that brought the happiness.

Altogether, this was a really engaging and entertaining book that was wonderful to listen to and made us smile. Furthermore, the book has given us the opportunity to learn about children’s rights, to explore and taste the fruits from Handa’s basket, and to speak about our uniqueness and importance.

However, our journey is not finished yet, so be ready for other adventures along with Handa and her friend, Akeyo.

Room 16: Working Towards the John Muir Award

In Room 16 we have been working on our John Muir Award all year. This focuses on Outdoor Education.

In order to achieve our Bronze Award, we have to do 4 days work in our chosen outdoor space.  We chose our playground, as we felt it was a bit bare and it was readily accessible to us.

Our plan was to blur the boundaries between the indoor and outdoor spaces.  Here’s what we’ve done so far:

  • Learned about the Scotsman John Muir and his work protecting natural spaces in North America.
  • Explored our playground in different seasons and from different perspectives.
  • Planted lots of bulbs, seeds and seedlings in science lessons.

 

  • Planted flowers.
  • Experimented with flowers in science lessons

 

  • Used natural and recycled materials in craft projects.

 

  • Been for lots of walks in the local community, to the shops, duck pond, parks and outdoor fitness area.
  • Fed the birds (ducks, robins and sparrows) at the local duck pond.
  • Decorated milk bottle plant pots for house plants in our classroom, which the pupils look after.

  • Made a sound sculpture with pots and pans in the playground, for pupils to play with.
  • Hung up a large thermometer in the playground for everyone to use.

But we are not quite finished yet.  We are in the process of making some more interactive and noisy sculptures for the playground.

We would like everyone to be able to enjoy using the outdoor spaces in school more, so here’s hoping for some dry weather!

Discovering Nuart in Room 12

Room 12 are beginning to create a wide variety of art work, inspired by Nuart in Aberdeen.

They have looked at images and videos relating to the work around Aberdeen and hope to go and view some of it in situ.

So far, they have explored the work of Hama Woods, Jan Vormann and Anders Gjennestad, some of which can be seen around Aberdeen. They have also explored techniques such as yarn bombing and the transient nature of chalk art.

Celebrating May Day in Room 12

Room 12 celebrated May Day on 1st May. We crowned our May Queens and Kings and looked at a PowerPoint and videos of Morris and Maypole dancing. We played along with our bells. In pairs, we made Maypoles from cardboard tubes, stickers and crepe paper, and used playdough to ground them. We added play people for our display.

Room 15 had Fun in the Sun

We enjoyed participating in different kinds of energetic play and developing our movement skills through practice.

We also enjoyed eating our snack in the park.

A Colourful Term in Room 3

This term our topic has been Our Colourful World. We have been reading the book The Rainbow Fish and exploring the colours of the rainbow using all our senses.

 

Each week we discover a different colour by touching and feeling lots of different things that are all the same colour and we use some of these materials to make a scale for our very own rainbow fish. Then we get to taste, feel, smell and play with food items that are that week’s colour. It has been fun to discover some new foods and juices. Some of the things we have liked: sweet chilli rice crackers, green beans, strawberries, baked beans & orange smoothie. Some of the things we haven’t liked: jelly (it was fun to play with but we didn’t like the texture in our mouths), radishes, green smoothie, tomatoes.

Papier Mache In Room 4

The children in Room 4 have been creating their own colour amongst the stars.  They used papier mache to make planets and then decorated them in different colours.
