SQA Home Economics with room 17 and 18

Some of the pupils in room 17 and 18 have been working on a variety of HE units. They have been focusing on cleaning skills and food preparation tasks. We are planning to post some of the recipes that are being used in HE so that they can be used at home.

Home Economics with Howes Hoose

Howes Hoose have been working on increasing their independence in the kitchen, working on food preparation skills and using electrical equipment safely. They have been using these skills to run their soup making business, with the profits going towards the residential and Duke of Edinburgh trips that they will be attending in the Summer term.

Children’s Author visit

On the 7th of November, we were lucky to have the amazing children’s author, Phil Earle, visit us at Orchard Brae as part of the Scottish Book Trust 20th anniversary tour.

We had a wonderful time hearing about where Phil finds his inspiration (his family, wrestlers and front doors have been big influences) and we even got to hear him read two of his books to us along with a wee bit of dressing up in between!!

Phil has since written a wonderful blog for the Scottish Book Trust about working with pupils with additional support needs. There are some great photos of his visit to Orchard Brae included in the blog and he confirms what we all know about our students – that they are passionate and enthusiastic and this shines throughout everything they do!

Well done to all the students who participated with such enthusiasm and thank you Phil and the Scottish Book Trust for an amazing experience that they will never forget!

Bronze Duke Of Edinburgh with Howes Hoose

The group were working with Toby , our Duke of Edinburgh support person, learning to put up a tent. Thankfully it was not pouring with rain or blowing a gale so we did very well. Everyone agreed it was very cosy inside!

Sensory stories and music with Room 8

Room 8 have been experiencing a wide variety of communication and sensory sessions through sensory stories and music sessions. You can see how much fun they have been having from the photographs.

Eco Committee

Orchard Brae School is participating in the Eco-Schools Scotland award scheme.  Eco-Schools is a global programme which promotes sustainable development education, connecting millions of children across 67 countries worldwide.

Eco-Schools Scotland is designed to encourage whole-school community action and the programme encourages young people to engage in their environment by allowing them the opportunity to actively protect it.  The programme starts in the classroom and expands to the whole school, eventually fostering change in the community at large.
