Facebook Technical Issues

Please note that we are currently experiencing technical issues with our Facebook page.

As both the ‘Orchard Brae School, Aberdeen’ and ‘Friends Of Orchard Brae’ pages are linked to the same home account and experiencing the same issues, they are both currently unavailable.  We hope to have the issues resolved as soon as possible.

Seasons’ Change At The Lemon Tree

Pupils and staff had an amazing time performing our unique sensory piece ‘Season’s Change’, created in collaboration with Aberdeen Performing Arts, at the Lemon Tree earlier this month.  We would once again like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along and supported us and joined in the fun.

We were fortunate enough to have had a professional photographer there documenting the evening and we are delighted to share their images with you.

Room 14 Enjoy the Sun at Stonehaven

Room 14 enjoyed a trip to Stonehaven beach.  We had lunch from the Bay Chipper and a play in the park.  Room 14 boys enjoyed themselves.

‘Aberdeen Reads’ Summer Challenge

Aberdeen City Libraries are launching a new initiative called ‘Aberdeen Reads’ over the summer holidays. The challenge runs right over the summer and replaces the reading challenge which has been promoted over recent years.

There are incentives to read at least 6 minutes every day, mini-challenges and an invitation for the whole family to join in.  There are also a range of events taking place at libraries across the city (places must be booked in advance).

Further  information can be found using the link below:

Kids Out 2019

Some of our primary pupils took part in a very special outing on Wednesday at the SRUC Aberdeen Campus at Craibstone, participating in a range of activities organised by various Rotary clubs in Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire for their annual Kids Out fun day.
Despite the gloomy weather, we all had a fantastic time. Some of the highlights of the day included bouncy castles and face painting, magic shows, Aberdeen Science Centre, a disco and the very noisy police van and fire engine. However, the best bit of the day for many of our pupils were the animals and there was great excitement over the numerous pony rides, bird displays and Therapet dogs.
Thank you so much to everyone in the local Rotary clubs for organising such a wonderful day and we can’t wait for next year.

Room 13 Visit The Maritime Museum: The History of Punch and Judy

At the end of May we set off on public transport to explore the Punch and Judy exhibition at the Maritime Museum.

The exhibition told us the history of Punch and Judy and how it developed in this country especially in seaside towns like Aberdeen, Blackpool etc.

There were also many props for children to try on and hold as you can see from the photos.

Kitchen Skills in Room 16

This term we have been practicing using round bladed knifes more accurately.  We’ve made faces and animals with fruit so far.

Seasons’ Change At The Lemon Tree

Last night a group of pupils from across the school performed their piece, Seasons’ Change in the Lemon Tree Studio as part of Aberdeen Performing Arts ‘Light The Blue’ festival.

The pupils (along with some friends who unfortunately couldn’t make the performance) and staff members have worked extremely hard throughout a series of workshops in school, where we worked collaboratively with Kate from Aberdeen Performing Arts, class teacher Jessica and Emmeline our music therapist, in order to create our final performance.

There has been lots of fun along the way as everyone fully engaged their senses to develop a piece of drama which allowed the cast members and audience to move through the seasons.  We used a wide range of stimuli and there were lots of surprises along the way.

All of the pupils were a true credit to themselves and the school in last night’s performance and the audience’s participation was fantastic.  We are so proud of everyone involved and would like to thank them all for all their hard work and effort in performing a truly magical and unique performance.

Word Of The Fortnight-NO/DON’T

We have a new Makaton Word of the fortnight and our new focus is…NO/DON’T.

Negatives (words like ‘don’t’ and ‘no’) are an important part of language and our students benefit from these being modelled when learning to use negatives themselves. However, we do recognise that they can be tricky when used as part of behaviour management. Using ‘stop’ is often more effective in stopping unwanted behaviour. NO/DON’T can be used for lots of negatives or negations such as no, can’t, won’t, don’t, never and without.

As well as a sheet of activity ideas there is also an information sheet to support the implementation of this core word.

A video demonstrating the Makaton sign can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDkRI2C7IKA

Happy signing. 🖐🤚
