Work Hard / Play Hard in Room 18

Room 18 continue to expand their horizons with new work experience opportunities. We now have a young person working in the kitchen on Thursday mornings, supporting the catering team with food preparation and serving at lunchtime. We have young people working with our Janitor, and we continue other jobs around the school including watering the plants and recycling. Our Sandwich Enterprise continues and we provide a great service for staff on Tuesdays, making and delivering sandwiches.

Aside from hard work, we do enjoy opportunities to relax during break and lunchtime. Finding the balance in life is good!

Football Tournament

Last week some of our Secondary pupils attended a Football Tournament at Garioch Sports Centre. Once again we enjoyed the opportunity to socialise with young people from other schools and to compete against them in friendly competitions.

Developing Independence in Room 18

In Room 18 we are always out and about! Now that we’re in the Senior Phase of learning we are developing independence and life skills in everything we do. Our day begins with Breakfast Club, our alternative to Circle Time, catching up and chatting about the day ahead. Later we’re out and about doing different things – recycling, work experience around school, shopping and enterprise activities to name but a few.

Active Schools Curling Festival

Pupils enjoyed taking part in the curling festival at Curl Aberdeen. We rotated around 6 different stations and had the opportunity to try different activities. Everyone tried pushing the stones at skittles, targets and playing a game of curling. We all had different strengths: some of us were very good at aiming for the centre of the target, gently pushing the curling stones with just the right amount of force, while others were very good at skittles due to our ability to push the curling stone a long way.

Red Nose Day in Room 18

Room 18 celebrated Red Nose Day today. We watched a short film and learned about the serious side of Comic Relief, talking about the way that donations made support children both in the UK and across the world. We then had some fun, playing a game of ‘Nose’ (a Beetle Drive by another name). We did this in teams and had lots of laughs throughout!

Ragbag Collection

The pupils in Room 16 have been working hard on our Ragbag project for 18 months now.  We are delighted to confirm that we have raised approximately £900 for the school fund (that’s more than 2 tonnes of clothing that have been saved from landfill!).

Rag bag is a Scottish textile and clothing recycling scheme.  Items are graded according to their quality at their premises in Falkirk.  Wearable items are sent to developing countries as 2nd hand clothing, items which may have been torn or damaged recycled and become carpet underlay or industrial cleaning cloths or even mattress lining.  Either way they are kept from landfill.

There are 3 collection schemes, 1: send bags home, 2: inside collection bin (at school front office) and 3: external collection bin.  We are proud to say that we have all 3 schemes in operation.

We collect clothes, pairs of shoes, belts and bags.

So this Spring, as you clear out your winter wardrobe, feel free to fill a bag of rags for us!

Football Tournament

The football team recently played another session of matches at Aberdeen Sports Village. They showed great improvement and battled on despite fierce opposition. Congratulations to them all for their sportsmanship. They were all a real credit to the school!

Room 18 Keeping Fit!

As part of our Senior Phase Curriculum, pupils from Room 18 have been keeping fit at our local Sports Centre. They have taken to it very quickly and are very much enjoying the cardiovascular equipment. We’ve shown enthusiasm in cycling, rowing, using the cross trainer and treadmills. Many of us enjoy walking uphill on the treadmill and some of us have even been for a run. Good effort Room 18! We all need to follow in your footsteps a bit more!

SQA Home Economics with room 17 and 18

Some of the pupils in room 17 and 18 have been working on a variety of HE units. They have been focusing on cleaning skills and food preparation tasks. We are planning to post some of the recipes that are being used in HE so that they can be used at home.

Room 18 – On the Go!

Room 18 have had a very busy term developing many of their life-skills including ironing, dish washing, making sandwiches and having fun with their friends along the way.
