Young Leaders Of Learning

The Young Leaders of Learning programme has been developed by Education Scotland with the aim of enabling and empowering pupils to have an increasing say in their education and school. As a school, we have been in the fortunate position of working alongside Maxine Jolly, Senior Education Officer for Education Scotland, in adapting the programme for use in ASN schools.

Yesterday, a group of secondary pupils participated in a training day at the Beacon Centre alongside colleagues and pupils from Bucksburn Academy ASN Wing.

The students worked together in identifying the key skills required to be an effective young Leader and had great fun designing their Leaders.

The students also spent time identifying and comparing key areas of the two schools and sharing their likes and dislikes.

We’re absolutely thrilled to be the first group of pupils and staff trained from specialist settings and we look forward to participating in the programme with Bucksburn Academy ASN Wing over the rest of this term.

Visiting Neighbours at the Heathryburn Community Cafe

Every Tuesday Room 16 pupils and staff go to the Heathryburn Primary School Community Café.  As well as having a snack, a small group of Primary 7 pupils join us to play card games and board games.  Last week we decorated T-shirts.  We really enjoy going and have learned a lot being there.

Everyone is welcome in the Community Café from 2pm – 3:20.  Entry by the main school door.  Maybe see you there!

Orchard Brae Clothing Exchange

Thanks to everyone that has sent in items for our Clothing Exchange. Please remember that you’re welcome to pop in and browse any time. It’s a great way to save money and help the planet by passing things on that our children and young people have grown out of.

We’ve got clothing in a wider range of sizes now. All sizes of clothing are welcome as our pupils go from age 3-18.

Cinema Outing for Room 16

On Thursday we went to the cinema to see “Playing with Fire.”  It was funny and silly. Michael and Sam laughed the most.  Shay and Ella enjoyed the popcorn.

We went on bus number 11.  The drivers were very helpful.  Gracjan was talking to people on the bus.  Abdur and Lewis helped buy bus tickets.

We had a great post-Christmas treat.

Uniform Exchange: Save money and help the environment!

We are pleased to announce that we now have a Uniform Exchange in the front reception area of Orchard Brae. We have a small stock of clothing at present including footwear, trousers, school sweatshirts and polo shirts. We also have some bodysuits in smaller sizes. Free sanitary products will be available at all times.

You are welcome to come in and browse at any time, taking what you need for your child.

Donations of clothing (footwear, outdoor jackets or trousers, school uniform) are welcome and can be sent in with your child – please pop a note into the diary so that we know they are for the Uniform Exchange. Our pupils are aged 3 – 18, so all sizes are welcome including adult sizes.

Let’s help ourselves by saving money and passing on clothes that our children have outgrown, and help the environment too by re-using good clothing.

Enterprise Rewards for Room 16

In October we collected items and organised a tombola. We walked around school with the tombola on a trolley and sold tickets to the staff, escorts and bus drivers we met.  In November we used the money we raised to pay for a trip to Codona’s bowling alley.  Hard work does pay off!

Secondary Futures Event

We would like to thank everyone that attended the Secondary Futures Event this week. It was a successful evening with a wide range of partners attending – some who support pupils through work experience at Senior Phase, and others who support our young people on leaving school. The evening was relaxed with plenty of time to chat and find out about services following a talk from Elaine Thomson, Head of Secondary, on the senior curriculum.

Christmas Fair: 30th November 2019

Room 12 are holding another doll raffle, to be drawn at the Christmas Fair on 30th November 2019, all proceeds to Orchard Brae.

Included in the prize is a beautiful wicker basket bed, bedding, the doll and several outfits – from a bride’s dress, to clown’s outfit to pyjamas and matching dressing gown and more. Doll donated and bedding and outfits beautifully made by the mum of one of Room 12’s class teachers.

Tickets to win all this are £1! Come and see us at the fair to buy your ticket!

There will also be many dolly clothes at our stall available to buy separately. These are unique, handmade and better than any dolls clothes you’ll see in the shops!

Halloween Fun at the Pupil Council Disco

The pupil council decided they wanted a Halloween disco and a pumpkin carving competition on Halloween. We enjoyed a whole school disco, with all the tunes being selected in advance by the pupils.  There were lots of fantastic costumes too.

Room 16 Make Bird Feeders

In October we made eco bird feeders, by coating pine cones in bird seed. It was a sticky job and took a lot of concentration.  The next day we hung some in the school playground and took the rest to hang up at the duck pond.  We then gave the leftover bird seed to the ducks.
