Clothing Exchange

Room 16 have been doing a great job, supporting the Clothing Exchange scheme. Pupils are regularly tidying up the area, washing, sorting and folding new clothing. It’s good to see an increase in sizes available too. Please keep sending items in if they’re in good condition and no longer of use to your child. Do also feel free to pop in and browse any time or let us know via the home school diary if you’d like the class team to have a look on your behalf.

Life Skills in Room 15

In Room 15 we have been working hard on applying our learning to recognisable contexts that will support our functional independence in the wider community.  In particular, we have been making fantastic progress with our shopping skills.

Each pupil uses a symbol shopping list to know what they need to look for, with a personalised focus – whilst some of us work to match the shop items to the symbols, others are counting, labelling colours, comparing big and little or choosing flavours from the available selection.  Our symbol-shopping lists are relatively recent but the class are already demonstrating familiarity with how to use them as we promptly and accurately find the items we need to find.  This also gives us an opportunity to develop our reading skills as we identify information from (symbol-supported) text and apply our communication skills including using our communication devices.

Once we have found all of the items on our list we go to pay for our items.  As before, each of us has individual targets – some are working on matching one coin with another, but some of us have recently progressed to beginning to label a small range of coins.

The whole class has shown notable progress in recent weeks in these skills which we can take with us as we explore our wider world.

Friends of Orchard Brae Fun Run: 28th April 2020

Many thanks to the brother of one of our pupils who has asked if he can fundraise individually through sponsorship for the 5k Fun Run for Friends of Orchard Brae. If anyone else wishes to raise money through the Fun Run or any other sponsored activity in future, sponsor forms can be obtained via the Friends of Orchard Brae by contacting school, or a sponsorship page can be set up at: https://wonderful.org/charity/friendsoforchardbrae

Lisa Thomson (Chairperson of the Friends) is the normal point of contact for any fundraising. Clare Russell can also be contacted regarding the Fun Run.

Full information regarding the Fun Run can be found here: https://scottishrunningguide.com/race/fun-run-for-friends-of-orchard-brae

or check out the Friends of Orchard Brae Facebook page.

Please remember, all participants must be over 12 years of age to enter, and must be accompanied by an adult at all times if under 16. Donations are optional – the event is free to run for everyone!

World of Work with Room 15

Room 15 have been exploring different jobs recently as part of our ASDAN units.  Through role play we have explored jobs that members of our families or the people who work with us do.

We role played being oil rig workers by donning high-vis vests, hard hats and practicing our communication of “stop” and “go” as we ran “oil” (water) down ramps and collected them in buckets.

We role played being chefs and bakers by practicing our hand-washing skills, putting on aprons (because we learned hygiene is very important for a chef!) and measuring out ingredients into a bowl and mixing them.  This gave an opportunity to work on “more” and “finished” with our communication systems too!

One pupil had some additional work experience shadowing the teacher for bucket time – she explained what was happening for bucket time and sang our bucket time song.

Orchard Brae Clothing Exchange

Thanks to everyone that has sent in items for our Clothing Exchange. Please remember that you’re welcome to pop in and browse any time. It’s a great way to save money and help the planet by passing things on that our children and young people have grown out of.

We’ve got clothing in a wider range of sizes now. All sizes of clothing are welcome as our pupils go from age 3-18.

Pyjama Day in Room 15

With icy weather meaning we couldn’t go out for our last bus outing of the term, Class 15 decided to bring a special treat to class instead.  On Tuesday we had a pyjama day, watching a Christmas movie in our pjs!

Ksenia helped to warm milk for our snack (we added a cinnamon stick for a Christmas treat) and we made healthy popcorn in class (as well as carrot stick “chips”!) – the popcorn made our classroom smell just like the cinema.  We used our  coin recognition skills to “buy” a ticket for our film too.  We then relaxed with every blanket and pillow we could find to watch “Santa Claus: The Movie”.

Everyone enjoyed our end of term treat, and in the afternoon continued with the Christmas theme as we made our Christmas cards and used AAC to communicate who we wanted our card to be for.

Uniform Exchange: Save money and help the environment!

We are pleased to announce that we now have a Uniform Exchange in the front reception area of Orchard Brae. We have a small stock of clothing at present including footwear, trousers, school sweatshirts and polo shirts. We also have some bodysuits in smaller sizes. Free sanitary products will be available at all times.

You are welcome to come in and browse at any time, taking what you need for your child.

Donations of clothing (footwear, outdoor jackets or trousers, school uniform) are welcome and can be sent in with your child – please pop a note into the diary so that we know they are for the Uniform Exchange. Our pupils are aged 3 – 18, so all sizes are welcome including adult sizes.

Let’s help ourselves by saving money and passing on clothes that our children have outgrown, and help the environment too by re-using good clothing.

Secondary Futures Event

We would like to thank everyone that attended the Secondary Futures Event this week. It was a successful evening with a wide range of partners attending – some who support pupils through work experience at Senior Phase, and others who support our young people on leaving school. The evening was relaxed with plenty of time to chat and find out about services following a talk from Elaine Thomson, Head of Secondary, on the senior curriculum.
