Christmas Fair: 30th November 2019

Room 12 are holding another doll raffle, to be drawn at the Christmas Fair on 30th November 2019, all proceeds to Orchard Brae.

Included in the prize is a beautiful wicker basket bed, bedding, the doll and several outfits – from a bride’s dress, to clown’s outfit to pyjamas and matching dressing gown and more. Doll donated and bedding and outfits beautifully made by the mum of one of Room 12’s class teachers.

Tickets to win all this are £1! Come and see us at the fair to buy your ticket!

There will also be many dolly clothes at our stall available to buy separately. These are unique, handmade and better than any dolls clothes you’ll see in the shops!

Halloween Fun at the Pupil Council Disco

The pupil council decided they wanted a Halloween disco and a pumpkin carving competition on Halloween. We enjoyed a whole school disco, with all the tunes being selected in advance by the pupils.  There were lots of fantastic costumes too.

Room 12 Experience Halloween

Room 12 have enjoyed celebrating Halloween. We have explored the insides of pumpkin, tolerating and experiencing the different textures, the bright colour and the smell.

We used paint to decorate our pumpkin, mixing the colours and using different sponges and brushes to create texture and colour.

We experienced the school Halloween disco. Some of us chose to dress up, whilst others enjoyed the lights and music.  There was a fun atmosphere.

Potted Sports

Everyone enjoyed the Potted Sports organised by our PE Department on Wednesday. Thank you to everyone involved for the hard work that went into this, including our Howes Hoose pupils who supported at the stations. We all had a great time moving around in our class groups, finishing up with a running ‘marathon’ for any Secondary pupils wishing to participate. They were well supported by those opting to spectate.

Yarnbombing with Room 12

Our class have been looking at the amazing NuArt all around Aberdeen and wanted to come up with our own contribution for an outdoor piece of artwork. We looked at some videos that showed yarnbombing all over the world and thought this is something we could adapt and put our own stamp on.

Yarnbombing is a type of street art that shows displays of knitted or crocheted wool, yarn or fibre. It can also be called yarn storming, guerrilla knitting, kniffiti, urban knitting or graffiti knitting.

We started with some knitted backgrounds and chains that Allison, our EYP made and then made some wool wrapped twigs, learned how to use pompom makers and made tassles and attached them all to the trees outside our window. We think they make a lovely display. It’s a work in progress – there are many trees in our playground we can yarnbomb!

Official Yarnbombing Day is 11th June.

 

Discovering Nuart in Room 12

Room 12 are beginning to create a wide variety of art work, inspired by Nuart in Aberdeen.

They have looked at images and videos relating to the work around Aberdeen and hope to go and view some of it in situ.

So far, they have explored the work of Hama Woods, Jan Vormann and Anders Gjennestad, some of which can be seen around Aberdeen. They have also explored techniques such as yarn bombing and the transient nature of chalk art.

Celebrating May Day in Room 12

Room 12 celebrated May Day on 1st May. We crowned our May Queens and Kings and looked at a PowerPoint and videos of Morris and Maypole dancing. We played along with our bells. In pairs, we made Maypoles from cardboard tubes, stickers and crepe paper, and used playdough to ground them. We added play people for our display.

The Greatest Showman in Room 12

Room 12 thoroughly enjoyed their Greatest Showman themed drama lesson. Drama Sam had brought in some fantastic props for us to use and we had great fun displaying our skills with hoops and ribbons! It just so happens that The Greatest Showman is a favourite with some of our classmates, so we know the songs quite well. We were dancing, singing and acting being circus performers, and that wasn’t just the pupils…!

Enjoying a Visiting Storyteller in Room 12

Room 12 enjoyed a visit from multi-sensory storyteller, Ailie, of Flotsam and Jetsam. The story she shared with us was about a cat going to see a giant. Ragbag Collection

The pupils in Room 16 have been working hard on our Ragbag project for 18 months now.  We are delighted to confirm that we have raised approximately £900 for the school fund (that’s more than 2 tonnes of clothing that have been saved from landfill!).

Rag bag is a Scottish textile and clothing recycling scheme.  Items are graded according to their quality at their premises in Falkirk.  Wearable items are sent to developing countries as 2nd hand clothing, items which may have been torn or damaged recycled and become carpet underlay or industrial cleaning cloths or even mattress lining.  Either way they are kept from landfill.

There are 3 collection schemes, 1: send bags home, 2: inside collection bin (at school front office) and 3: external collection bin.  We are proud to say that we have all 3 schemes in operation.

We collect clothes, pairs of shoes, belts and bags.

So this Spring, as you clear out your winter wardrobe, feel free to fill a bag of rags for us!
