Welcome to the Secondary Department

The secondary department has 8 classes and pupils follow the principles of Curriculum for Excellence: a broad general education in S1-S3 and the Senior Phase in S4- S6.   The curriculum is varied, relevant, challenging, enjoyable and adapted to meet our pupil’s individual needs.  Pupils also visit a range of specialists, have access to relevant therapeutic inputs and participate in wider community events.

The Greatest Showman in Room 12

Room 12 thoroughly enjoyed their Greatest Showman themed drama lesson. Drama Sam had brought in some fantastic props for us to use and we had great fun displaying our skills with hoops and ribbons! It just so happens that The Greatest Showman is a favourite with some of our classmates, so we know the songs quite well. We were dancing, singing and acting being circus performers, and that wasn’t just the pupils…!

Red Nose Fun In Room 11

Room 11 had great fun celebrating Comic Relief.  We decorated red nose pictures and tried on special red nose day glasses.  Don’t you think we look fabulous?

Enjoying a Visiting Storyteller in Room 12

Room 12 enjoyed a visit from multi-sensory storyteller, Ailie, of Flotsam and Jetsam. The story she shared with us was about a cat going to see a giant. As you can see from our faces, we were all entertained by the story and the range of props that supported our understanding and enjoyment.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Active Schools Curling Festival

Pupils enjoyed taking part in the curling festival at Curl Aberdeen. We rotated around 6 different stations and had the opportunity to try different activities. Everyone tried pushing the stones at skittles, targets and playing a game of curling. We all had different strengths: some of us were very good at aiming for the centre of the target, gently pushing the curling stones with just the right amount of force, while others were very good at skittles due to our ability to push the curling stone a long way.

Choosing Books: Room 15 Visit Waterstones

Room 15 pupils enjoyed a bus trip to Waterstones in the Bon Accord Centre.  We all had fun choosing a book.  We looked carefully at the different books before deciding which one we wanted.  Some of us chose ‘Ten Little Bookworms’ and some of us chose ‘Minifigure Mayhem’.  We are all looking forward to reading our books at home.

New Appointment: Orchard Brae Environmental Officer

We are pleased to announce that a pupil from Howes Hoose has been appointed Environmental Officer for the school. He will be responsible for monitoring the litter in the school playground, in the Community and in the wider Community of Aberdeen, a big job. We have already noticed some fly-tipping in the area which will be reported to the Council.

We went to visit the fantastic recycling facilities in Aberdeen. We would like to encourage you all to reduce your waste, re-use items or give them to someone who can re-use them like a Charity Shop, or recycle them. Thank you.

PE Challenges for Room 14

Room 14 have been enjoying obstacle courses in PE this term.  We have been climbing, doing hurdles, walking on uneven surfaces and going in, on and under things.  We have also really enjoyed bouncing on the trampette.

Our pupils have grown in confidence and have been challenged with different apparatus, growing in confidence as a result of this.

‘Mouse Paint’: Colour Mixing in Room 14

Room 14 enjoyed listening to and watching the story ‘Mouse Paint’ by Ellen Walsh.  We then enjoyed a variety of activities exploring colour mixing.

Thank You From Howes Hoose

The students and staff in Howes Hoose would like to thank everyone that supported and came along to their fundraiser in February at the Sunnybank Social Club.

We would also like to thank everyone who donated to the raffle – there are honestly too many to mention! We were overwhelmed with the gifts, vouchers and hotel stays that were donated.

We raised a total of £2500 on the night and are still filling in the Pick A Date calendar to win a signed Aberdeen Football Club top and football. The money raised will go towards supporting the students working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Scotland award and trips to the Bendrigg Trust.

Spring Fundraiser

Some students from North East Scotland College have kindly arranged a Spring Afternoon Tea Fundraiser in aid of Orchard Brae.
The event is being held Jaffs Bar and Restaurant in Dunecht on Saturday 27th April from 2-4pm. Tickets are priced at £15 and are available from Howes Hoose.
Any donations for the raffle would also be gratefully received and can be handed into Howes Hoose.
