Room 3 Christmas Outing

The pupils and staff in Room 3 headed into Aberdeen for our Christmas outing.  We travelled on the school bus and our first stop was the Bon Accord Centre where we spotted all sorts of different lights, trees and decorations while listening to Christmas music.

We tried out the smells of different candles in the Yankee shop and practised our skills in communicating which ones we liked and those we didn’t – our reactions were very clear!

We took a little trip to the Disney store to look at the toys, one pupil loved giving the teddies biiiiig hugs and we were all given a special sticker.

After that we wrapped up very warm to head out to the Winter Village!  There were lots of sights, sounds and smells to take in before we embarked on a little ice skating.  Everyone loved having a turn to whiz around the ice and there were big smiles!

We headed to the Recharge café for our well-needed lunch who gave us lots of help and even brought some lovely sensory toys for us to explore.  We enjoyed having some time to relax and socialise together.

Special thanks to the OB nursing team and Charlie House for their support in making our day out run so smoothly.

Technology Time with Room 3!

The children in Room 3 are all working very hard on their targets in using technology.  We use switches throughout our daily routines and are practising hard to develop our skills while using the computer, switch toys and even fun appliances such as the hair dryer!  We all like iPads and use these to make pictures, create sounds and read stories.  Some pupils are using eye gaze technology via the Grid Pad and concentrate hard while working on this particularly tricky skill.  Each child has their own motivators and using particular games and stimuli encourage them to really concentrate, even when the work is a little bit tricky.  Some recent happy stories include a young man who realised when he pressed the switch his favourite ‘twinkly’ song played and very quickly understood that he needed to wait for the song to finish before pressing again, children joining up together to share operating favourite songs on the screen and a young lady generalising her eye gaze skills to make cheeky sound effects in front of all her friends during a story session!

Christmas Fair: 30th November 2019

Room 12 are holding another doll raffle, to be drawn at the Christmas Fair on 30th November 2019, all proceeds to Orchard Brae.

Included in the prize is a beautiful wicker basket bed, bedding, the doll and several outfits – from a bride’s dress, to clown’s outfit to pyjamas and matching dressing gown and more. Doll donated and bedding and outfits beautifully made by the mum of one of Room 12’s class teachers.

Tickets to win all this are £1! Come and see us at the fair to buy your ticket!

There will also be many dolly clothes at our stall available to buy separately. These are unique, handmade and better than any dolls clothes you’ll see in the shops!

Halloween In Room 3

The children in Room 3 have been busy having lots of spooky fun this week.  We had our own (home grown!) pumpkin patch in class and enjoyed exploring the story of ‘Splat the Cat and the Pumpkin Picking Plan’.  We went jumping in leaves after sweeping them up, had lots of fun picking the perfect pumpkin while taking in the sights and smells of the patch then it rolled all the way home!  The children particularly liked our very interactive spooky singing session.  We have explored lots of interesting toys and objects which might dance, sing, light up or blow bubbles – some amazing visual and auditory tracking has been happening.  Halloween messy play was a big hit…we tried out jelly, gloop, spaghetti and rice crispies – some of us even tried it out with our feet!  We participated in the school pumpkin carving competition and took great delight in getting hands on with a drill to make a starry night pumpkin.  Everyone looked fantastic in their costumes on the big day itself and we even celebrated a Halloween birthday.  Well done Room 3 for your very active participation.

Halloween Fun at the Pupil Council Disco

The pupil council decided they wanted a Halloween disco and a pumpkin carving competition on Halloween. We enjoyed a whole school disco, with all the tunes being selected in advance by the pupils.  There were lots of fantastic costumes too.

Movement Time in Room 3

The children in Room 3 have been doing incredible work on their movement skills since returning to school! The children use their equipment daily as part of class routines and work so hard to stand up tall in their standing frames or take steps in their walkers.  Twice a week we do focussed movement sessions where we use a range of floor based positions as well as equipment.  On a Tuesday we focus on trying out activities in a range of positions, sometimes these are new or challenging but the children are so motivated.  On a Friday we have a music and movement session which is linked to our story.  We have been exploring all the animals’ movements from ‘The Animal Boogie’ while moving our bodies to different pop and Disney songs in a range of positions.  The children work together in pairs or small groups throughout the week in their equipment and are further developing their awareness of each other…sometimes there’s a real sense of competition while we throw/kick balls or try to press the computer first but likewise sometimes it is nice just to lie together during a relaxation time or even help encourage a friend by holding up a favourite toy for them.   Being active is great – amazing work Room 3!

Our First Week In Room 3

This week the pupils in Room 3 came back to school and some of our pupils celebrated their first day of Primary One.

We explored the story ‘First Day at Bug School’ and the children engaged so well as we moved through the different classes that the bugs attend!  We started the story and went through the grass (Pom Poms helped set the scene!) then listened to the ‘tiny school bell ring’ which took us into bug school.  We started by doing the register where we hid under the cloths before pulling them off our heads just like we do in our class!  In Spider science class we loved watching the water fall down the spout (there was quite a lot of splashing too!), in Ladybird maths class we spun the spinner before listening to/feeling on body counting to the same number, in PE class we worked hard to push the huge gym ball off our trays and it was so much fun to watch it bounce across the classroom and music class with the Crickets was a huge hit too!  Almost as much fun as a day at Orchard Brae.

We are super impressed with how quickly the children have settled into the school routine for the first time/after the long holidays and are very excited for all the learning ahead of us in Room 3 this year.

Potted Sports

Everyone enjoyed the Potted Sports organised by our PE Department on Wednesday. Thank you to everyone involved for the hard work that went into this, including our Howes Hoose pupils who supported at the stations. We all had a great time moving around in our class groups, finishing up with a running ‘marathon’ for any Secondary pupils wishing to participate. They were well supported by those opting to spectate.

A Colourful Term in Room 3

This term our topic has been Our Colourful World. We have been reading the book The Rainbow Fish and exploring the colours of the rainbow using all our senses.

Each week we discover a different colour by touching and feeling lots of different things that are all the same colour and we use some of these materials to make a scale for our very own rainbow fish. Then we get to taste, feel, smell and play with food items that are that week’s colour. It has been fun to discover some new foods and juices. Some of the things we have liked: sweet chilli rice crackers, green beans, strawberries, baked beans & orange smoothie. Some of the things we haven’t liked: jelly (it was fun to play with but we didn’t like the texture in our mouths), radishes, green smoothie, tomatoes.

A brilliant, bouncy birthday in Room 3

Room 3 were very lucky to go on a trip to Jump In to celebrate our classmate’s 8th birthday!

We had a wonderful time bouncing on the trampolines and playing in the sponge pool and by the end of the day we were all ready for an early night!
