Word Of The Fortnight-NO/DON’T

We have a new Makaton Word of the fortnight and our new focus is…NO/DON’T.

Negatives (words like ‘don’t’ and ‘no’) are an important part of language and our students benefit from these being modelled when learning to use negatives themselves. However, we do recognise that they can be tricky when used as part of behaviour management. Using ‘stop’ is often more effective in stopping unwanted behaviour. NO/DON’T can be used for lots of negatives or negations such as no, can’t, won’t, don’t, never and without.

As well as a sheet of activity ideas there is also an information sheet to support the implementation of this core word.

A video demonstrating the Makaton sign can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDkRI2C7IKA

Happy signing. 🖐🤚

Summer In The City Guide 2019

Summer in the City Guide 2019

This year’s Summer in the City Guide of events for children and young people, is now available online at the following link:

Click to access SITC%202019.pdf

The decision was made not to print the guide again this year, it is only available as a pdf copy. This has allowed the creation of an interactive diary section and use colours and photographs with additional clarity, more so than previous versions allowing for easy viewing on computer screens, phones and tablets.

Rehearsals At The Lemon Tree

Some of our staff and pupils had a super morning at The Lemon Tree, rehearsing for our upcoming performance on the 11th of June as part of Aberdeen Performing Arts, Light The Blue Youth Arts Festival.   We have been working alongside Aberdeen Performing Arts to create a performance which takes you on a sensory journey through the seasons, with some surprises for the audience along the way!   As you can tell by our photos, we all had great time and we can’t wait for the final show and it would be wonderful if you could come along and join us.

The performance is free but tickets must be obtained prior to the event – please see the link below for booking details.

Kilt Walk

After a  very busy week at the senior residential trip to Bendrigg, one of our pupil’s from Howes Hoose managed to find the energy to walk 5 miles for the Aberdeen Kilt Walk!  He collected his sponsor money for AFC Community Trust that runs his football sessions on a Saturday morning and he managed to raise almost £500!

What an amazing effort and a huge well done on raising such a fantastic amount.

Baking With Room 4

The children in Room 4 have been very busy making fruit scones in home economics.

They were supported to measure out the different ingredients using the scales and we all enjoyed taking turns at mixing the ingredients with a spoon.

Technology With Room 11

Technology is fun!

All children in Room 11 have been participating in language and numeracy lessons and have been encouraged to use technology. Some children in our class use switch to operate a range of educational programmes, some use touch screen to navigate pages and the other ones are really good at using eye gaze to wider their experiences and develop communication skills.

We all like our sessions as they are fun!

A Trip To The Airport With Room 5

Room 5 have been on a very exciting class trip to Aberdeen Airport.

We all have a fantastic time!  We got to go through security, go onto a plane and sit in the pilots seat, drive down the runway, visit the fire station and spray the water hose and of course see lots of planes and helicopters take off and land.  George and Ali at Aberdeen Airport were brilliant tour guides!!!
