Bendrigg 2022

Last week, pupils from Room 17, 18 and Howes Hoose embarked on our first trip to the Bendrigg Centre since 2019!

Pupils took part in a range of activities- Sensory Swing, Zip Line, Climbing, Canoeing, Caving, Archery and Biking. Thankfully there was a huge amount of food available to keep us well fed!

As you can see from the photos, all of our pupils worked incredibly hard and pushed themselves to try new things. We heard the words ‘I did it!’ and ‘keep going’ over and over again and the smiles on faces show exactly what it meant.

A huge thank you goes to the Bendrigg Trust for looking after us for the week and also to the Friends of Orchard Brae for supporting us with funding for the trip. We had a wonderful time and are already looking forward to next year!

Howes Hoose Work Experience

The pupils in Howes Hoose have been very busy on work placements. They now have the opportunity to work at Airyhall Community Centre and Somebody Cares. Work placements are very important for the pupils to meet and work with new people, increase their confidence and independence. Everyone on work placement is working hard and they are very polite to people they meet. Well done to all the Howes Hoose pupils for representing Orchard Brae in the wider Community in such a positive way.

The Book Fairy Visits

We had a lot of fun at Orchard Brae today, the Book Fairy visited us leaving copies of ‘A Boy called Christmas’ by Matt Haig around the school. The book is part of a nationwide book-drop to coincide with the film coming out today!

Lots of our classes had fun searching for the books, here are some of the ones we found!

Thank you Book Fairy (and Matt Haig), we will really enjoy reading the book during our school Winter Festival.

Rotary Shoebox Appeal 2021

As a school we feel that it is very important for our students to support others within the wider community and in some cases, some of the most deprived countries in the world.  Following on from this, the staff and students in Howes Hoose are once again organising the Rotary Shoebox Appeal this year.

You do not have to send in any money and we are not asking for families to fill a shoebox but rather send in donations from the list shown below.   This will allow our students to organise and fill the shoeboxes in school.  We have found in previous years that the best way is to buy a multi-pack of an item and we will divide these up between boxes.  The items do not have to be expensive and could be things you have at home which you no longer want, so long as they are in good condition.

Apologies for the short notice but could any donations please be sent in by Wednesday 8th October to allow the students time to pack them up ready for collection so they can be distributed in time for Christmas.

Thank you once again for your amazing support.

Budding photographers

Last year, Room 19 entered the ‘My Place Photography Competition’. Pupils were encouraged through the competition to explore their surroundings and share photographs. Room 19’s photos are being displaying in a public exhibition, you can see their photos here:

The group took photos in school and out in the community using iPads.

I am sure you will agree there are some fantastic photos in the group.

Well done to all
