Marble Runs In Room 8

Marble runs are great for open-ended building. They’re an example of using Science, Technology, and Math. And, they’re a lot of fun, both for the kids and the adults.

The boys and girls in Room 8 discovered so many benefits of building their two marble runs.

Everyone in Room 8 sloped, bent, twisted, turned to make building a marble run challenging, but it was fun.  So, engineering or building something is one of the benefits.

So many questions as ‘Will it work if I ….?’ The benefits are problem solving and trial and error.

Everyone from the box and the other people building the marble run. Next benefit – following directions.

It took a LONG time to build a big marble run. It can also take time to make something new work or figure out how to successfully connect different pieces. There’s not a lot of instant gratification with a marble run. So, the patience was the key.

Building a marble run wasn’t easy. But, sticking with the process and not giving up helped build patience and perseverance.

Marble runs are open-ended activities. There are lots of ways to build and construct marble runs, so the possibilities are endless. Being creative, wewere building two marble runs.

We needed everyone participating while building our successful marble run. So, we have been cooperative.

Weincorporated a lot of Math naturally when we were building our marble run. For example, counting how many pieces are needed to complete the marble run. Predicting which one will be fastest or estimating how long it will take to complete the marble run.

Precision and care were needed when we were connecting pieces of a marble run. So, building a marble run helped us to develop our hand-eye coordination.

All the colours, shapes, and different types of pieces, combined with constructing a marble run that’s long, tall, superfast, had many starting points, gave plenty of opportunities for children to use their imagination.

Primary Department Activities – Week Beginning 22nd June

Our Google Classrooms have gone live!  Your child’s teacher will be using Google Classroom to share activities with you but we are aware that some families are waiting on technology and other supports to enable them to access Google Classroom so we will still be posting a selection of activities here too.  If you haven’t logged in yet or having difficulty accessing Google Classroom please contact your child’s teacher who will be able to offer you support and advice.  Here is a short video to show you some of the exciting things happening on Google Classroom.

A Busy Week In Primary

All the staff at Orchard Brae are missing seeing all our pupils every day and we are always eager to see and hear what you’ve been up to.  We love seeing what everyone has been busy doing while they are at home and we have some wonderful photos and videos to share with you this week.

If you would like to share what you have been up to at home, please send any photos or videos via your child’s teacher, the Orchard Brae School Facebook Messenger page or email Amy Dunnett (Principal Teacher Primary) adunnett@aberdeencity.gov.uk.  Downloading videos from the Orchard Brae School Facebook Messenger page appears to be working again (fingers crossed!) however if you are having any issues, please send them using a free transfer site such as Dropbox or WeTransfer.

Working Hard

We’ve been delighted to see how well some of our pupils have been working and learning at home .

There has been lots of work on this week’s story ‘The Snail And The Whale’, listening to the story, making seaside inspired pictures and creating seaside sensory tubs.  Some pupils enjoyed taking their daily exercise at the beach – I wonder if they managed to spot any whales?  One pupil even managed to find a seaside themed treasure trove when he was out for a walk!!

Others have been busy practising their writing or simply taking part in a familiar school routine such as circle time and some enjoyed exploring science and technology by making their own sensory bottles .

Some of you have been enjoying listening to stories, and the Bedtime stories shared on the school website and Facebook page have been a nice way to see some familiar faces and hear some familiar voices from around the school!

Making Music

It’s been a fun, musical week, listening and joining along with your favourite tunes!

Out And About

We’ve loved seeing where you’ve been visiting when you’ve been out and about in your local communities.

Getting Active

You’ve all been busy this week exploring different ways to keep yourselves active from swinging around, bouncing about on balls and on the trampoline, climbing trees, enjoying a bike ride with your family or working on building your core strength.

And Always Remember…

We love seeing all your smiles and even during this difficult and strange time it’s important to have fun, whether it’s on your own exploring nature…

…playing with your favourite toys…

…or simply chilling out and having some sensory fun.

Remember to make some wonderful memories and have fun with those you love.

We can’t wait to see what you get up to next week!

Birthday Boy

One pupil shared some photos and a video from his birthday celebrations!  It looks like he had lots of fun celebrating with his family.

Working Hard

We’ve been delighted to see how well some of our pupils have been working at home on continuing their learning.

There has been lots of work on this week’s story ‘The Story Monster’, listening to monster stories, exploring the colour of emotions and creating your own colour monsters.

Others have been busy practising their writing.

Getting Crafty

We love seeing how you are all exploring your creative side!

Making Music

It certainly looks like there has been lots of fun being musical this week, making and playing instruments and listening to your favourite tunes!

Life Skills

Once again, we’ve been impressed with you’re life skills, whether it be developing your independent feeding skills…

…exploring tastes…

…or helping to bake some yummy treats!

Out And About

Despite our delightful Scottish climate and having four seasons in one day this week, you’ve managed to get out and about and explore your local area.

Animal Antics!

From feeding the ducks and watching the lambs when you’ve been out and about, to playing with a new kitten at home, we’ve loved seeing your photos of you interacting with animals.

Getting Active

You’ve all been busy exploring different ways to keep yourselves active from swinging around, bouncing on the trampoline, chasing bubbles, tiring yourselves out with some sport or simply having a stretch.

And Always Remember…

We love seeing all your smiles and even during this difficult and strange time it’s important to stop and smell the flowers…

…make some wonderful memories and have fun with those you love.

We can’t wait to see what you get up to next week!
