Discovering Nuart in Room 12

Room 12 are beginning to create a wide variety of art work, inspired by Nuart in Aberdeen.

They have looked at images and videos relating to the work around Aberdeen and hope to go and view some of it in situ.

So far, they have explored the work of Hama Woods, Jan Vormann and Anders Gjennestad, some of which can be seen around Aberdeen. They have also explored techniques such as yarn bombing and the transient nature of chalk art.

Examples of the artist’ work and the map of locations can be found at: https://2019.nuartaberdeen.co.uk/

Football Tournament

Last week some of our Secondary pupils attended a Football Tournament at Garioch Sports Centre. Once again we enjoyed the opportunity to socialise with young people from other schools and to compete against them in friendly competitions.

Celebrating May Day in Room 12

Room 12 celebrated May Day on 1st May. We crowned our May Queens and Kings and looked at a PowerPoint and videos of Morris and Maypole dancing. We played along with our bells. In pairs, we made Maypoles from cardboard tubes, stickers and crepe paper, and used playdough to ground them. We added play people for our display.

Improving the School Grounds with Howes Hoose

In Howes Hoose, our work with Daniel from Aberdeen City Council Parks Department has continued. As part of our SQA Personal Achievement Award we are working on a Community Activity. With support and guidance from Daniel, we are working to develop our school garden and grounds. We’ve been extremely busy and have planted 3600 seeds! We have planted peas, beans, pumpkins, radishes and cornflowers. We look forward to seeing them brighten things up and tasting our wares when they are ready!

Room 15 had Fun in the Sun

We enjoyed participating in different kinds of energetic play and developing our movement skills through practice.

We also enjoyed eating our snack in the park.

Easter Experiences in Room 14

Room 14 have enjoyed looking at Easter and participating in a range of activities around this.

We have explored the Easter story, rolled eggs, participated in several Easter egg hunts and enjoyed decorating eggs.

Developing Independence in Room 18

In Room 18 we are always out and about! Now that we’re in the Senior Phase of learning we are developing independence and life skills in everything we do. Our day begins with Breakfast Club, our alternative to Circle Time, catching up and chatting about the day ahead. Later we’re out and about doing different things – recycling, work experience around school, shopping and enterprise activities to name but a few.

First Week Back for Room 17

Room 17 had a good first day back after the holidays. We did some Rainbow Science and discovered what happens if you pour water over Skittles. We used cold, warm and hot water to see how quickly or slowly the colour patterns appeared. We found out that hot water makes the colour move quickly, while cold water makes it move slowly. And we even got to eat the Skittles afterwards!!

Innoflate: Room 5’s Extra Special Outing

Room 5 worked really hard last term. As an end of term treat they went to Innoflate. Everyone had lots of fun, staff included, and enjoyed the slides, jumping around and playing on the big bubble. We were all very hungry after our play session so enjoyed a relaxed lunch in Burger King. We have all settled back really well this week too.

Room 13 Explore Aberdeen Nuart

As part of our Interdisciplinary theme ‘Our World of Rights’, one of our pupils has been out and about on public transport locating the Nuart in the city centre.

He has seen how the art work is carried out using “cherry pickers” for the artists to reach the highest points of their art work.

He will keep a photographic progression of the art work and exhibit his findings on a notice board in the school for all to read, enjoy and gain information from.
